How a sewing machine makes stitches

Posted by Better Living Through Sewing on 11/13/2013 to sewing tips
Have you ever wondered what's happening inside your sewing machine? This animation explains how stitches are formed.  In the animation, the yellow thread is your upper thread, the green thread is the bobbin thread, and the light purple/blue lines indicate your fabric layers.

A rotating hook in the bottom of the machine picks up the upper thread from the needle, wrapping it around the thread from your bobbin.  the upper thread then pulls the bobbin thread to the surface of your machine, creating one stitch as the fabric moves through your machine.
